SCOTT COUNTY — A Scott County sheriff’s deputy was fired upon early Monday while responding to a disturbance call, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched around 3 a.m. to a disturbance at 172 Watson Drive. The first deputy to arrive was met with gunfire from a suspect identified as Billy Joe Slaughter, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said the deputy retreated to a position of cover, and the suspect fired another round in the deputy’s direction.
Additional deputies arrived and negotiated Slaughter’s surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident, the sheriff’s office said.
“We are grateful no one was hurt in this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, urging the public to keep law enforcement and first responders in their prayers.
No additional details, including potential charges, were released. The incident remains under investigation.
