MORTON — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into a fatal officer-involved shooting Thursday involving the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Morton Police Department, authorities said.
Deputies were responding to reports of a man attempting to enter vehicles in the parking lot of a local business when they arrived to find the same individual driving a yard truck through the lot, according to MBI. When deputies tried to make contact, the driver fled, prompting a pursuit.
On Highway 13, the fleeing driver struck a cement truck, a passenger vehicle and an occupied school bus, officials said. Deputies then fired their weapons in an attempt to stop him, striking the man and causing fatal injuries. No other injuries were reported, and no deputies were hurt.
MBI said it is gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances of the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be presented to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office. The agency noted the information is preliminary and may change. It is routine for MBI to investigate officer-involved shootings.
