The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate after an inmate was seriously injured during an altercation at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility, according to Sheriff S.W. Calhoun.
The incident happened on Saturday, November 29, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Officials say two inmates were involved in a fight inside a bathroom on the ground floor of one of the housing pods.
Detention officers and the on-duty nurse responded and provided medical care until Metro Ambulance arrived. Because of the severity of his injuries, one inmate was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to a medical facility in Jackson for further treatment.
No detention officers were involved in the altercation, the sheriff’s office said.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department requested that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
“The safety and security of all individuals in our facility remain a top priority,” the sheriff’s office said in the release, adding that they will continue to cooperate fully with investigators and take every necessary measure to maintain a safe environment for both inmates and staff.
