St. Dominic Becomes First Hospital in Mississippi to Perform New Aneurysm Repair Procedure

St. Dominic Hospital has become the first hospital in Mississippi to perform a new minimally invasive procedure for complex aneurysm repair, according to a release from St. Dominic.

The procedure, called TAMBE (Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis), is an endovascular technique used to repair aneurysms in the main artery that carries blood from the chest through the abdomen. It is performed without traditional open incisions, which can reduce recovery time as well as the risk of blood loss and infection.

“Our team is excited about continuing our commitment to complex endovascular techniques in service to Mississippians and patients from bordering states,” said Dr. Zachary Baldwin, a vascular surgeon at St. Dominic Hospital. “At FMOL Health | St. Dominic, we remain committed to clinical excellence and innovation in vascular care.”

Dr. Baldwin performed the first TAMBE procedure in Mississippi on Dan Branton, a 76-year-old Mississippi resident who suffered from a thoracoabdominal aneurysm, a serious condition that affects both the chest and abdomen. Before TAMBE was available, a patient with this type of aneurysm would typically need a major open operation involving both the chest and abdomen.

“There would be no doubt I’d recommend St. Dominic’s,” Branton said. “My daddy had the same operation in Houston in the ’80s, and they cut him from one end to the other. It took him forever to get over that. So, yeah, you can imagine how grateful I am.”

St. Dominic Hospital has been offering endovascular operations for aneurysm disease for more than 11 years. The addition of TAMBE is the latest advancement in vascular care at the facility.

According to St. Dominic, more information about the Mississippi Heart and Vascular Institute at St. Dominic Hospital is available at their website.
