Whether you’re partial to peanut butter and jelly or can’t resist a fully loaded club, we’re giving you an excuse to celebrate today: it’s National Sandwich Day!
Observed every year on Nov. 3, the day honors one of America’s most beloved and versatile meals. There are deli classics piled high with meats and cheeses at your local Firehouse Subs or Sonic to creative gourmet builds featuring artisanal bread and fresh vegetables at Panera or Basils. Sandwiches remain a lunchtime staple across the country.
According to food historians, the sandwich owes its name to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English nobleman who reportedly requested his meal be served between two slices of bread so he could eat without leaving his card game.
Since then, the sandwich has evolved into a symbol of comfort and convenience. Feel free to mark the day by making your own signature creations (like Elvis’s that we featured a few years ago) in celebration.
Whether it’s toasted, pressed, cold or grilled, National Sandwich Day is all about enjoying the simple pleasure of the world’s simplest comfort food.
