Jackson — Mayor John Horhn has nominated Akilah Irvin to the Jackson Public Schools (JPS) Board of Trustees, citing her deep roots in the community and long-standing commitment to student success.
Irvin, a lifelong Jackson resident, brings years of experience in education advocacy, nonprofit leadership, and public service. She previously served on various school and community advisory committees supporting children’s literacy and youth development programs.
“Akilah understands what it means to serve and to lead,” said Mayor Horhn. “Her perspective as a JPS alum, JPS parent and a community advocate will help strengthen our district and keep us focused on what matters most, our students.”
In accepting the nomination, Irvin expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “I’m honored to be nominated at such a critical time,” she said. “Jackson’s children deserve strong schools, dedicated teachers, and a community that believes in their potential. I’m ready to do the work to help make that a reality.”
The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees oversees policy, budget, and governance for the second-largest school district in Mississippi, serving close to 18,000 students. Irvin’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Jackson City Council.
