HEIDELBERG — A third person is dead in Heidelberg following Friday night’s shootings and ensuing chaos at a high school football game, authorities confirmed.
Police Chief Cornell White said the third victim, Cayus Stevens, who died in a Jones County hospital, appeared to have been trampled in the melee that broke out after gunfire erupted near the Heidelberg High School football field, killing two others.
Stevens was a part of Heidelberg’s class of 2018. He was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle and was not shot.
Two victims — Chris Newell, 35, and Mikeia McCray, 28, both of Laurel — were killed in the gunfire, according to Jasper County Deputy Coroner Jesse Crosby.
Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson said four Bay Springs teenagers have now been arrested in connection with the shooting, which happened during the school’s homecoming game against Mize.
Tylar Jarod Goodloe, 18, of Bay Springs, has been charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon on educational property. Goodloe was taken into custody Saturday and formally charged Sunday. Jasper County Justice Court Judge Jacqueline Barnett set his bond at $2,010,000 cash only.
Three other suspects have also been charged. Damarin D. Starks, 19, of Bay Springs, was arrested Monday on charges of accessory after the fact and tampering with physical evidence. Later that evening, authorities arrested Jadarius Quartez Page and Jabari Deshaun Collins, both 19, also of Bay Springs.
Page faces a charge of accessory after the fact, while Collins is charged with possession of a deadly weapon on educational property, Johnson said.
The sheriff said more arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
Authorities from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are assisting Heidelberg Police Department in the ongoing case.
