WOODVILLE – At Wilkinson County Correctional Facility, inmates recently got a chance to explore science up close, viewing microorganisms under microscopes for the very first time.
For many inmates, it was a moment of discovery. One inmate described the experience:
“When I looked through the microscope and saw something moving, I jumped back at first. It was my first time viewing microorganisms in person. It was fascinating.”
A special thank you to MTC staff, Wilkinson County leadership, and Southwest Mississippi Community College for investing in the potential of our inmates and opening doors to new worlds of possibility.
MDOC Private & Regional Director Derrick Chambers praised the effort, noting that programs like this keep inmates motivated and engaged while preparing them for opportunities beyond incarceration.
“This is exactly what corrections should look like: education, discovery, and hope for the future,” Chambers said.
The initiative is a reminder of what’s possible when agencies and educators work together, turning prison time into preparation time and showing that rehabilitation is real.
