Sunday morning, a citizen brought a grenade to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office after locating it on Saturday.
Deputies immediately secured the device and contacted the Tupelo Bomb Squad, who are currently on the way to safely dispose of it.
As a precaution, the immediate area around the Sheriff’s Office has been secured while law enforcement awaits the arrival of the bomb squad. At this time, there is no threat to the public, and all safety protocols are being followed.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins stressed the importance of exercising caution in these situations:
“We understand that citizens want to do the right thing, but we urge everyone: if you find a grenade, military ordnance, or anything that looks like an explosive, do not touch it or transport it. Call 911 immediately and let trained professionals respond to the location. Bringing these items to public places, including the Sheriff’s Office, puts people at risk.”
The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public of these safety measures:
• Do not touch, move, or attempt to transport a suspicious or explosive device.
• Call 911 immediately and report the location.
• Stay at a safe distance until law enforcement arrives.
• Keep others away from the area.
The Tupelo Bomb Squad will evaluate and safely dispose of the device once they arrive on scene. This is an ongoing investigation, and further updates will be provided as available.
The Sheriff’s Office and EOD teams are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.
“Your safety is our top priority. If you see something that looks dangerous, let us come to you,” said Hawkins. “Never take chances with explosives.”
