MONTICELLO — The Lawrence County Fire Service is urging residents not to burn outdoors until the area receives significant rainfall, citing dry, windy conditions that could easily fuel wildfires.
Officials said in a public notice that low humidity and gusty winds have created dangerous fire risks.
“We ask that you respect your neighbors as well as your VFD and just don’t do it,” the fire service wrote in a Facebook post, reminding residents they are always responsible for their fire and any expenses it causes.
Mississippi currently has no county or statewide burn bans, but fire officials noted that when bans are in place, anything with an open flame that produces embers — such as campfires, burn barrels or debris burning — is prohibited. Propane and gas grills, gas heaters and charcoal grills are typically allowed if used safely and disposed of properly.
The fire service emphasized that hot coals should always be doused with water and cooled completely before being discarded in a metal container.
