September is recognized nationally as Suicide Prevention Month, and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is urging residents to learn the warning signs and know that help is always available.

According to MSDH, suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, and awareness can play a critical role in saving lives. Recognizing when someone may be struggling and reaching out for support can make a difference.

Warning signs may include:

  • Talking about suicide or feelings of hopelessness

  • Acting anxious, reckless, or withdrawn

  • Sleeping too much or too little

  • Increasing drug or alcohol use

  • Showing extreme mood swings

If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that help is available. You can call, text, or chat 988 at any time, from anywhere, to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The Mississippi State Department of Health emphasizes that no one has to go through these struggles alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and resources are in place to support those in crisis.
