An O’Bannon High School student was killed in more gun violence in Greenville over the weekend.

Greenville police tell The Delta News that Cody Boettcher, 16, was shot multiple times as he sat in the back seat of a vehicle, and a 12-year-old sitting in the front seat was also shot. There was an adult driving the vehicle, police said.

The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. Sunday near the 500 block of Highway 82 and Fairview. Police Chief Marcus Turner told the Delta News that it looked like the shooting happened when the vehicle stopped at a red light.

Greenville recently had others injured and killed in similar gang violence, and Turner called the shooters, “cowards.” He encouraged the community to tell police when they know about such criminal activity.

Bottcher was a 9th grader. The Western Line School District released a statement saying, “Cody was a valued member of our school family, and his loss is felt deeply by students, teachers, and staff alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Cody’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve.”
