The last anyone knew, Monroe County resident Jeff Harmon might have been going to buy a used car with some money he’d gotten in a lawsuit against a former employer on June 29, 1985.
It wasn’t just any lawsuit, though, it was because Harmon, 23, had been hazed and assaulted during his work for the company and had originally sued for $50,000. His family said at the time that people were threatening him because of the suit, and that he had been afraid to go out in public. Thinking that it would end, he had agreed to settle for $3000.
Authorities said the last person known to have seen Harmon alive told them he had dropped him off in Becker, Mississippi, where they met a man in a blue pickup truck. Harmon had gotten into the truck to ride with him to get the car, and they drove away. Police say they weren’t sure if Harmon was meeting the still-unidentified man to buy the used car, or if they even knew each other. Harmon has not been seen or heard from since.

In 2009, a man named James “Rodney” Mills confessed to allegedly helping dispose of Harmon’s body but said he wasn’t responsible for his murder. He said that he buried Harmon in a freshly-dug grave at Willis Cemetery, which was about 300 yards from his home. Police showed him a photo of the cemetery and Mills picked out a grave, but Harmon’s body wasn’t found there.
Mills has not been charged in his participation in Harmon’s murder, but he maintains that his story is true. It’s unclear if he ever gave up his co-conspirators.
