(Yuma, Arizona) Wednesday, Attorney General Lynn Fitch joined her colleagues from across the country in Yuma, Arizona to visit the Southern Border.
The Attorneys General toured the recently resumed border wall construction, met with Border Patrol Agents, and visited the Yuma Regional Medical Center to discuss the impact of illegal immigration on the health care system.
According to Fitch’s office, since President Donald Trump took office, illegal border crossings are down 95% and thanks to President Trump’s negotiation efforts, Mexico cracked down on drug traffickers and seized 1,500 kilograms of fentanyl – the largest in Mexico’s history – and has arrested over 6,000 drug traffickers.
In March, AG Fitch announced that she would be the third Attorney General’s Office in the nation to join U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Section 287(g) program.
The 287(g) Task Force program allows state and local law enforcement entities to partner with ICE for delegated immigration enforcement to enhance public safety by identifying aliens, lodging immigration detainers, and initiating removal proceedings by issuing charging documents on potentially deportable criminal aliens booked into the jail facility.
The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is the only agency in Mississippi currently participating in the program by training and certifying all of its sworn law enforcement officers as members of the 287(g) Task Force.
