The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating the death of a detainee at the Raymond Detention Center, according to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones.
Sheriff Jones said that 37-year-old Anthony Terrell Johnson was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 8:15 p.m.
Sheriff Jones stated that Johnson had been assaulted, and that the cause of death remains under investigation.
Johnson had been arrested just two days earlier, on Sunday, by Capitol Police, and was facing charges of simple assault and auto theft.
The MBI is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death. Further details will be released as they become available.
