The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office announced the conviction of Javier Escamilla, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who pleaded guilty to the crime of sexual battery against a child.
Escamilla was sentenced to five years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. However, because of his immigration status, he will not serve that sentence in the U.S. Instead, after serving 414 days in county jail — at an estimated cost of over $25,000 to taxpayers — Escamilla will be deported.
“This conviction sends a clear and unwavering message — we will not allow child predators to roam freely in our communities,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton. “The safety of our children is non-negotiable, and we will continue to work relentlessly to protect our families from anyone who seeks to harm them.”
The case was investigated by the Southaven Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Weathers.
