A routine traffic stop on Interstate 20 turned into a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon, ending in the arrest of a man now facing multiple felony charges.
Around 12:17 p.m. on April 3, a deputy with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics & Interdiction Task Force initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 71 on I-20 East, close to Pelahatchie. Upon approaching the SUV, the deputy reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
As deputies prepared to search the SUV, the driver fled the scene, prompting a multi-agency vehicle pursuit. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received support from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department during the pursuit.
While fleeing, the suspect reportedly threw bags of narcotics from the vehicle onto the interstate. Deputies also noticed that multiple children were inside the vehicle, escalating the urgency of the situation.
In an attempt to bring the chase to an end, a Scott County deputy deployed spike strips at Exit 88. According to reports, the fleeing driver swerved toward the deputy, nearly striking him before continuing briefly.
The vehicle was stopped a short time later, and the driver—identified as Tyrone Jacoberson Dorsey—was taken into custody without further incident.
A female passenger and three children who were in the vehicle were taken to a local hotel until family members could pick them up.
Dorsey now faces multiple charges including Felony Fleeing, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Felony Child Endangerment, and Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer in Scott County.
The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be pending.
