Edith HillmanEdith Hillman had been missing for a week before anyone knew to look for her.
The 6-foot-tall strawberry blonde-haired mother of a college student cooked dinner for her son on the night of Sunday, August 23, 1987. He went to school that night. She was excited about a new job she was supposed to start the next morning, on Monday.
Edith never showed up for that job. When her son came home that following Friday, Sunday night’s dinner was still on the stove.
There was very little media coverage at the time for the missing 59-year-old. Some reports had her missing since August 30, some since September 5, but none could offer any hard details. A $1,000 reward was offered, but no one stepped forward with information to collect it.
A tip finally came through in October 1987, when Greene County Sheriff Tommy Miller received information that Edith’s her blue 4-door 1979 Toyota Corolla was found in the front parking lot of Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.
The sheriff told reporters at the time that there was blood evidence in the back seat. Officials said a the time that the evidence indicated that Edith had been kidnapped from home.
