This week’s full moon, known as The Hunter’s Moon, will be the third of four consecutive supermoons, according to NASA. Due to its reaching pedigree a day earlier, this supermoon is expected to be slightly bigger and brighter than the rest.
The Hunter’s Moon, traditionally the first full moon following the Harvest Moon, falls in October and was named for a time when hunters would prepare for the winter by tracking and hunting game. The Hunter’s Moon would illuminate the night sky, providing light to assist in the gathering of food. This moon is often associated with the change of seasons and the preparation for the colder months ahead, and it has been a significant cultural symbol for many indigenous communities.
Officially full at 7:26 a.m. EDT on Thursday, Oct. 17, the full moon will be best seen rising in the east that evening wherever you are. It will be in the constellation Pisces, and it will appear bright and full the day before and after as well.
