Two men are dead after an apparent Murder-Suicide in Laurel on Wednesday.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a double shooting Wednesday morning around 9:55 am. Upon arrival at the scene, investigators found a deceased adult male in a truck parked at the residence on Chippewah Drive. A second individual was found behind the home and was also pronounced deceased.
Jones County Coroner Don Sumrall identified the deceased as Ucurtis Pollard (52) and his nephew Brandon Pollard (39). Ucurtis Pollard died of a gunshot wound to the head after being shot by Brandon Pollard, who then ran to the back of the property and turned the gun on himself.
According to Cam Bonelli of the Laurel Leader-Call, relatives notified of the deaths on scene screamed in shock and collapsed as bystanders tried to support them.
A violent fight then broke out between the son of the victim and another individual on the scene. The son, also named Ucurtis Pollard (31), was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest. Two JCSD investigators suffered minor injuries in the fight and arrest effort and were directed to a local medical facility for evaluation.
Sheriff Joe Berlin noted, “We are deeply saddened by this latest tragedy involving the murder-suicide today on Chippewah Drive. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the deceased.”
The Leader-Call reported this is the third shooting death in a week in Jones County and the second murder suicide in a month’s time.
