A Ridgeland police officer had to be extricated from his vehicle on Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a suspected drunk driver.
The wreck happened on the I-220 ramp. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Luis Antonio Alcaraz Medino, hit the officer’s vehicle while traveling at high speed, according to the Ridgeland Police Department.
Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers said that Luis Antonio Alcaraz Medino is in the country illegally.
Following the crash, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department conducted a blood test that showed that Medino was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
He now faces charges for DUI, as well as citations for driving without a license and driving without insurance.
Myers told reporters that the injured officer was treated and released from a local emergency room and is now recovering at home with family.
