According to WLOX, a 43-year-old man, identified as Justin Brown, was found dead after a standoff with police on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened on Kurykendall Place, and started as a domestic dispute between Brown and his parents.
WLOX reported that authorities responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. after reports that Brown had fired shots inside the house. When officers arrived, Brown allegedly opened fire on them, prompting a return of gunfire. Despite efforts by negotiators to peacefully resolve the situation, the standoff extended for nearly four hours before SWAT teams entered the home and found Brown deceased. It is unclear whether he was struck during the exchange of gunfire.
No officers were injured during the confrontation. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, and law enforcement agencies from Biloxi, Gulfport, and Harrison County all responded to help.
Long Beach Mayor George Bass said that the incident evoked memories of a tragic 1998 event in which two police officers were killed during a domestic disturbance. “It’s a horrible thing to think about that this is going on again in our community,” Mayor Bass said.
MBI has taken over the case.
