The Jones County Sheriff’s Department has been informed by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation of second degree murder charges filed today against George Ryan Walters in connection with a shooting incident at Rock Church on April 2, 2023. Walters surrendered himself to authorities and has been booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Facility pending his initial appearance in Jones County Justice Court.
Walters is a Jones County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Deputy; however, he was not on duty at the time of the incident. MBI was requested to investigate the shooting by Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin.
Walters was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday, April 4th, from his position as a Reserve Deputy with the Jones County Sheriff’s Department prior to today’s arrest and will remain on administrative leave until resolution of the charge.
As this is a legal matter being considered in a criminal court, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department will not have any further comment on the matter at this time.
