A Beaumont man says the mayor of his town shot put his life at risk when he fired a gun at a gas station after an interaction Tuesday morning.
Damon White said he and Mayor Scotty Dailey exchanged words about where he had parked his vehicle shortly before Dailey pulled out a gun and fired it. Sheriff Jacob Garner said the bullet hit the canopy. Gas station surveillance video caught the whole thing.
White said Dailey wanted him to move his truck so he could pull straight out instead of having to back his truck up to leave the gas station. The two can be seen arguing briefly on the video before it appears Dailey reached into his truck and pulled out the gun, apparently firing it into the canopy.
White said he went inside and called 911.
We reached out to Mayor Dailey’s office for comment and have not yet heard back, but we will update when we do.
An affidavit filed by White in Perry County Justice Court alleges that Dailey “did purposely, knowingly and unlawfully attempt to put Damon White in fear of imminent serious bodily harm by discharging a semi automatic 9mm hand gun into the owning (sic) of the Chevron gas station in Beaumont…”
Garner said a probable cause hearing will be held, which is standard for public servants and teachers accused in crimes, and that his office will act on whatever comes from that hearing if any action is necessary. At this point, Dailey would face a Simple Assault to Create Fear charge, which is a misdemeanor, but the court can add charges if they find it necessary.
