Oxford Police officers Brandon Byrd (top) and Canaan Pearson were recently honored for great work in apprehending an escaped inmate.

Two Oxford police officers are being recognized for great work after apprehending an escaped felon from another county.

On September 11, Officers Brandon Byrd and Canaan Pearson stationed on Highway 6 East spotted a vehicle matching the description of an escaped inmate from the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility and initiated a traffic stop.

The suspect, 39-year-old Ryan Burks, of Ridgeland, was arrested for Felony Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon.

The officers “demonstrated exceptional dedication when they pursued and successfully apprehended an escaped felon from Carroll County,” OPD posted on their Facebook page. “Both officers worked together, showing quick thinking and professionalism to bring the suspect into custody peacefully.”

Byrd and Pearson were given the Blue Line Award by the department, officials said, “in recognition of their outstanding service and commitment to community safety.”
