Columbus Police are investigating a late-night shooting when a local wrecker driver was grazed on the head by a projectile as he attempted to repossess a car.

According to Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton, a Columbus wrecker company was making a legal repossession of a parked car in the 600 block of 22nd Street South just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

When the wrecker was attempting to take possession of the car, a large crowd of 12-15 persons confronted the driver and several others from the company at the scene. Multiple shots were fired from the group, according to Chief Shelton.

“The wrecker driver was grazed on the head with some type of projectile,” said Chief Shelton. “He was treated and released at Baptist Hospital. Thankfully the wrecker company records their activities, and we do have a good video of the incident. I anticipate an arrest in the case.”

State law allows motor vehicles to be repossessed by lenders from driveways, public parking lots, and public streets.
