An officer responding to a call of a body in the road found that the victim was her own son Sunday morning.

Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart said the call came out around 2 a.m. on Larkin Street in Hazlehurst.

Hazlehurst Police Chief Darian Murray told reporters when his responding officers got to the scene, one of them recognized her son, Charles Stewart Jr., as the victim.

Stuart said it appears that Stewart, 20, died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Hazlehurst Police Department has handed the case over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation since it involves the family member of an officer.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help with information in the case. If you know who might have done this or if you saw anything in the area that night, please call the Hazlehurst Police Department at (601) 894-1181 or CEntral Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
