Today marks the second and final day of the 18th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament at the Refuge Golf Course in Flowood, MS.
This event brings together the local community to have fun, golf, meet local businesses, and most importantly – raises thousands of dollars for charities and non-profits.
Mayor Gary Rhoads, who is the Mayor of Flowood, puts on this event every year (with the exception of 2020), and sees it an important part of his work as a government official.
“We always try to think ‘Ok, let’s be the servant on something, not be the government in charge, but let’s be the servant that makes things happen’ – that’s always been my philosophy”, said Mayor Rhoads. “The volunteers and the city and the community comes together. Think of all the free food, all the prizes. . . it’s a great way to pull the community together.”
Every event, the mayor’s office chooses a different non-profit or charity to donate the fund to. This year it is the Northwest Rankin Cougar Club. “We are doing it for the kids athletic program at Northwest, to try to offset the cost of parents’ having to pay for kids to play extracurricular activities”, said Mayor Rhoads.
Over the years, hundreds-of-thousands of dollars have been donated to causes such as The Mustard Seed, JDRF (Type 1 Diabetes Research), Stop SMA, Breast Cancer research, and so many more.
“This is by far the largest tournament we’ve had. We had 100 teams in two days. Which generates some big numbers,” said Mayor Rhoads.
Because of this tournament, lives have been changed, cures have been found, and non-profits have been able to continue their good work without worrying about finances.
“It has really blessed my heart”, said Mayor Rhoads.
Thank you to Sheraton Flowood, The Refuge Hotel & Conference Center for hosting the event, all the volunteers from the community and The Flowood Chamber of Commerce, the sponsors, the teams, the silent auction donors, and workers who make this event happen.
