Forrest County deputies were involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon when a suspect allegedly attacked a deputy with a hammer, sources say.

According to release from the Forrest County Sheriff‘s office, deputies attempted to serve a civil commitment writ on a male subject in the 300 block of South Chancellor in Hattiesburg.

Shortly after deputies arrived at the residence a male subject allegedly attacked one of the deputies and they fought. The deputy received an injury to the head and the subject received a gunshot wound to the torso.

The deputy was transported from the scene via ambulance to Forrest General Hospital. The male subject succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and has initiated an investigation, which is standard in officer involved shootings.

The Forrest County deputies involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities say as part of the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office response to this incident, an internal administrative investigation will be conducted to review policy and training as it relates these types of incidents.
