A 16-year-old is dead after a Sunday morning shooting in Columbus.

Police say the victim, identified by Coroner Greg Merchant as Harvey Montreal Johnson, Jr., was found in a wrecked car in a ditch on Highway 182 near Poplar Street. The car matched the description of a car that had been called in four minutes before as a reckless driver.

There were bullet holes in the car, and Johnson had been shot. Officials said there was a passenger in the car that wasn’t injured.

“We believe the incident occurred in the 100 block of Poplar,” said Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton. “We believe there was some type of altercation and then gunshots. We have recovered shell casings at the scene on Poplar. We believe the driver was shot on Poplar and then drove away before crashing the car.”

Columbus Police are working to locate the person of interest.

“We have a name and we are working to locate the subject to talk to him,” Chief Shelton said early Sunday. “We are not ready to release that person’s name at this time as we continue to investigate the incident.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers or use the P3 free smartphone app.
