Brandon Police Chief William "Bubba" Thompson

On Thursday, Brandon Police Chief William Thompson addressed rumors on Facebook that his officers would shoot a dog at a local school.

“There has been some unfounded and completely untrue information pushed on the Rankin County, MS Lost and Found Pets ONLY Facebook page regarding a dog that was spotted at one of our schools. Several post indicate that the Brandon Police Department would ‘shoot’ the animal,” he wrote.

“This is completely untrue and those commenting obviously do not know the Brandon Police Department very well. The officers of the Brandon Police Department and its Animal Control Unit are undeserving of these comments posted on Rankin County, MS Lost and Found Pets ONLY. I have attempted to reply to the comments on but admin has yet to approve them,” he continued.

Thompson said it has never been the policy or practice of the Brandon Police Department to harm an animal unless it posses a “credible and immediate threat to the safety of the public or one of your officers.”

“Most of us are pet owners ourselves,” he said.

The post on the Facebook page has since been taken down.
