When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled northbound on Highway 51. After a very brief vehicle pursuit, the vehicle stopped on Highway 51 near Green Oak Lane. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.

Other Madison officers as well as deputies from the Madison and Rankin County Sheriff’s Office and MS Department of Wildlife & Fisheries arrived after which a perimeter was established while officers, deputies and police K9s conducted a search for the subject. The search was eventually discontinued without the subject’s capture.

Through further investigation, the driver who fled the scene was identified as Jesus Salvador Melendez, age unknown, from Jackson.

An arrest warrant has been obtained for Melendez for the crimes of Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer.
