One person is dead after a house fire in Lawrence County early Saturday morning.
According to Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks, the call came in around 8:37 a.m. that there was a structure fire on Henry Cox Road.
Weeks said Monticello and Lawrence County fire departments responded to the blaze quickly and found flames coming from the back of the home. There were no cars at the residence, which usually implies the house could be empty, but firefighters initiated a right-hand search pattern in the home.
The only place they were unable to search was the seat of the fire, Weeks said, where the actual blaze had started. They found no victims in the rest of the home, but when they extinguished the flames, they found the victim in the seat of the fire. The victim’s name has not been released.
Lawrence County’s Fire Marshal and the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s office are working the investigation, officials said. Sheriff Ryan Everett said it has been determined that there were no apparent signs of foul play or arson.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames to just the one room on the back of the house, Weeks said.
“But when the seat of the fire starts where the victim is, there’s not much you can do.
Firefighters and the State Fire Marshal were on the scene until 6 p.m. Saturday. Weeks said officials are still waiting on an official ruling on the cause.
“We stayed out there to make sure the whole thing was done right,” Weeks said. “I don’t think we left any ash unturned.”
